Tax Harassment of Former Resident Continues Four Years After His Move

California’s Pursuit of Former Residents for Past Taxes Sparks Controversy

Entrepreneur Hari Raghavan shared a screenshot of a letter he received from California, asking for taxes related to four years ago, after he claimed to have moved away from the state.

“Interestingly, four years later, CA is hunting down those who left,” Raghavan posted on X, mentioning that the state wants “an explanation of the circumstances surrounding your becoming a non-resident.”

He added, “This is not a joke. This is what a failed state looks like.”

Raghavan has voiced opinions that some may find controversial. A report from an Indian news site highlighted his comments on social media regarding the work habits of Indian employees, suggesting they are often less diligent and need supervision.

“I grew up in India, and I don’t think you understand how unreliable the work ethic of the average Indian employee is,” he stated, alluding to the company’s Indian founders and their focus on manufacturing locations in India.

This situation is familiar to many. Earlier this year, California placed a lien on my bank account for over $2,000 in unpaid taxes from 2019 and 2020—despite the fact I’ve not lived there since 2011. For five months, I’ve been trying to clarify my non-residency for those years. It feels like I’m being asked to prove something that’s nearly impossible.

Interacting with the Franchise Tax Board adds to the frustration. Calling them can be a hassle, as getting a consistent representative on the line is nearly impossible. It seems like a strategic way to exhaust you until you just give in.

Look at what Raghavan has to endure—all the obstacles, expenses, and the constant push to pay taxes he doesn’t owe. It feels like harassment from a struggling state aimed at forcing compliance.

Trust me, I’m not wealthy, but the stress over these past months has made me feel like I hear more requests for more documentation than anyone considering my livelihood.

This is akin to a twisted version of “Hotel California,” but instead of vices, it’s a corrupt tax system making escape from their grasp nearly impossible. Once you set foot in California, it feels like you’re tracked indefinitely, and not just you—your heirs might face the same chase.
