This week, New York City Mayor Mamdani and Governor Hochul seemed united in a photo op, but behind the scenes, other officials from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have ramped up their criticisms and threats against the governor.
The duo was all smiles while unveiling a massive socialist initiative aimed at providing free childcare, even joined hands in a display of unity.
However, during a closed party meeting on Thursday, those within DSA expressed a much harsher tone.
“I’m thrilled to work with the people of Albany to tax wealthy mothers,” stated Brooklyn State Assemblywoman Farah Sfrant Forrest.
She introduced her commentary by labeling Hochul as a “billionaire” who initially seemed promising but has since strayed from their ideals. Alongside Hochul, she pointed fingers at Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, dubbing them the other “villains.”
In the DSA’s perspective, there are three proposals on the table aimed at increasing taxes: a progressive income tax bill targeting those earning over $450,000, a new 2% city tax for individuals making above $1 million, and a corporate tax affecting businesses with profits exceeding $2.5 million.
As the conversation escalated during a video meeting, threats started to fly.
Brooklyn Representative Emily Gallagher expressed her anger towards Hochul, asserting that if no wrongdoing had occurred, then it should be considered a significant threat. Hochul is currently campaigning for re-election, facing challenges from a competing Lt. Gov. Anthony Delgado who’s been perceived as disengaged.
Gallagher continued, criticizing Hochul’s reluctance to impose taxes on the wealthy as “ridiculous,” insinuating that the governor thinks her focus should solely be on adhering to the right principles.
Amid mounting pressure from the DSA, Hochul is becoming more open to the idea of raising corporate taxes, although she firmly maintains that personal income tax increases are off the table.
Nonetheless, the DSA feels revitalized by Mamdani’s recent appointment, calling on its members to actively push forward with their agenda.
“Just as we played a significant role in electing Mayor Mamdani, we must also take responsibility for advancing his policies,” remarked one DSA leader.
