Taylor Townsend has withdrawn from the Guadalajara Open for emergency surgery after achieving a significant milestone in her career.
The American tennis player announced this news via two Instagram stories on Wednesday night, though she didn’t provide specific details about the nature of the surgery.
“Welp.. this s-t definitely wasn’t on my bingo card..😭” she commented, adding, “Through trials and tribulations.. still I rise 🐦🔥 I’ll update yall soon❤️.”
The following morning, Townsend shared a photo of herself in a hospital bed.
The 30-year-old, together with her doubles partner Kateřina Siniaková, recently celebrated completing a career Grand Slam as they defeated Ashlyn Krueger and Robin Montgomery in the U.S. Open women’s doubles final with scores of 5–7, 6–0, 6–2 at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
This victory means the top-seeded duo has secured all four Grand Slam titles, adding to their previous wins at Wimbledon in 2024, Australia in 2025, and Roland Garros this past June.
Townsend and Siniaková had their redemption in Queens this year after a loss in the 2025 final against Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe. After the recent win, Townsend famously brought two Honey Deuce drinks for the press conference.
Townsend also made an announcement regarding the WTA 500 hard court tournament, where she triumphed in a match on Monday. She expressed her excitement about playing in Guadalajara, saying, “Hi everybody, on the heels of achieving my first career grand slam at the US Open, I was so excited to play in front of all of you in Guadalajara. Because of emergency surgery, I am forced to withdraw from the GDL Open, and it breaks my heart. But, I’m looking forward to coming back here next year to see all of you, the greatest tennis fans. Viva Mexico!!!”
It remains unclear whether Townsend had her surgery in Guadalajara or if she returned to the U.S. for the procedure.
This past Monday, she defeated German player Tatjana Maria in a hard-fought three-set match with scores of 6-7, 6-3, 6-2.
Currently, Townsend is ranked as the No. 2 doubles player in the world, while Siniaková holds the top ranking. She also participated in the women’s singles competition at the U.S. Open but exited in the fourth round after a loss to top seed Aryna Sabalenka.
