Tragic Incident at Lake Macbride State Park
A teacher and her 10-year-old student lost their lives following a tragic event at Lake Macbride State Park during a fifth-grade field trip, according to officials. The victims have been identified as 24-year-old Hannah Jorgensen from Tiffin and Ahmed Osman, a 10-year-old from Iowa City.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office received a report just after noon on Tuesday about individuals in distress in the water near the Coralville Reservoir spillway. First responders located an adult at 12:43 p.m., who was declared deceased on-site.
Efforts to find the missing child continued through the day but were halted overnight. Authorities resumed the search Wednesday morning and found Ahmed at 1:24 p.m.
Jorgensen was a fifth-grade teacher at Borlaug Elementary, and Ahmed was one of her students. The school district expressed its sorrow over the loss, stating that the situation has left the community heartbroken.
The incident occurred during a field trip organized by the School of the Wild program at the Macbride Nature Recreation Area. In a statement, the district described Hannah and Ahmed as deeply cherished members of their community, emphasizing that their absence is profoundly felt at Borlaug and beyond.
The district also mentioned that counselors would be available at Borlaug Elementary to support students and staff during this difficult time. In expressing their condolences, they noted, “This is an extraordinarily painful time for the Borlaug community and our entire school district.”
Multiple agencies provided assistance in the search operation, including the local fire departments and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, among others. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds reached out to offer her sympathies, remarking that this tragic loss resonates through the entire community and expressing solidarity from Iowans statewide.
Jorgensen was also known for her previous role at Garner Elementary as a paraeducator, where she had made a significant impact. The school expressed its grief over both her and Ahmed’s passing and highlighted what a remarkable educator and person Hannah was.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident is ongoing, and the community is encouraged to support one another in the days ahead.
