Washington Teacher Charged with Incest

A teacher from a rural area in Washington has been charged with incest after allegedly having sexual relations with two of his adopted teenage sons.

Amber N. Swain, 35, was taken into custody earlier this week, facing charges of first-degree and second-degree incest, as indicated by a news release from the Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s Office.

“Forensic interviews with the victims were conducted on June 2, 2026,” the sheriff’s office reported. “After interviewing Mrs. Swain, detectives concluded there was probable cause to believe an incident had occurred.”

Newport, where the teacher resides, is a small town with a population of around 2,300, situated about 45 miles north of Spokane.

During her initial court appearance on Wednesday afternoon, District Court Judge Robin McCloskey mentioned that Swain also faces a charge of first-degree sexual misconduct with a minor.

Swain has been placed on administrative leave from Pend Oreille River School, which is an alternative high school within the Newport School District. The school district has stated that while details are limited, it takes such matters seriously and is cooperating with law enforcement as investigations continue.

On May 18, the Department of Children, Youth and Families contacted the sheriff’s office regarding potential sexual abuse involving two male teens, ages 17 and 18, with allegations reported a few months ago.

One of the boys reported to detectives that he had engaged in sexual acts with Swain “on numerous occasions,” including shortly before the police raid, as reported by KREM-TV.

The sheriff’s office indicated that probable cause to arrest Swain was established after examining text messages exchanged between her and one of the boys. Initially, she denied any sexual encounters but later admitted to having a relationship with one boy after he turned 18 in February.

A judge found sufficient probable cause on three felony charges on Wednesday, scheduling an arraignment for the upcoming Monday.

First-degree incest carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine, while the second-degree incest and first-degree sexual misconduct with a minor could lead to up to 5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Swain’s bond has been set at $20,000. She is prohibited from contacting the two boys or any minors, and she cannot leave the state of Washington.
