Teacher proposes armed opposition to ICE agents following shooting incident

Teacher Sparks Controversy with Comments on Immigration Enforcement

A history teacher from a Los Angeles high school, who also acts as a spokesperson for an anti-ICE activist group, seems to be advocating for armed resistance against immigration agents following the recent deaths of a federal agent and an undocumented immigrant.

Ron Gochez, teaching at Dr. Maya Angelou Community High School and representing Union del Barrio, spoke critically of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a press conference on Tuesday night. He reminded those present, “Don’t forget where you are. This is South Central Los Angeles. They are not the only ones in the area with firearms.” He quickly added, “I’m not promoting violence here; rather, citizens should feel entitled to defend themselves against unknown armed groups.”

Gochez insisted, “People have a right to protect themselves. This isn’t violence; it’s simply being smart.”

The backdrop of these remarks was a tragic incident where a federal marshal and an undocumented immigrant were killed during an immigration operation. Just hours prior, California had also moved to limit how law enforcement can operate. Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill barring state and federal officers from wearing masks during such operations, a directive that the Trump administration has expressed intentions to ignore.

This new legislation is set to go into effect in January.

The incident that sparked Gochez’s comments involved Carlitos Ricardo Parias, a 44-year-old from Mexico, who allegedly crashed his vehicle into a federal agent’s car before shots were fired. Both he and the federal agent suffered injuries from the gunfire, which authorities confirmed came from federal agents themselves.

According to prosecutors, Parias used his car in a reckless manner, leaving authorities concerned for everyone’s safety. Notably, he is also recognized as a TikTok influencer under the name “Richard LA.” Following the shootings, demonstrators vehemently expressed their anger at the hospital where the injured were being treated.

Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary of DHS, criticized sanctuary city officials for their roles in creating a hostile environment towards immigration enforcement, stating it has led to significant increases in assaults against law enforcement officers. She called for a reduction of hostile rhetoric from politicians and activists that she claims endangers the safety of all involved.

Meanwhile, Gochez condemned federal actions as “brutal violence” against immigrant communities, arguing that recent events reflect a pattern of oppression. He claimed, “They’re not just detaining our people; they’re shooting us repeatedly.”

Earlier this year, Gochez received the “Si Se Puede” Human Rights Award from the California Teachers Association, recognizing his advocacy for immigrant families and efforts to shield communities from ICE threats.

The complexities of the situation reveal a multifaceted struggle between immigration enforcement, community safety, and civil rights advocacy, illustrating the heightened tensions surrounding immigration in the U.S.
