Wreaths will be placed on the gravestones of thousands of veterans across the United States on December 14th to honor them and keep their sacrifice fresh in the hearts of all who watch.
“For me, when I look at the American people, I see what we can do when we all come together. There's a lot of volunteerism and love for our military here, and there's also a lot of understanding. Our mission is to protect the fallen… It's about commemorating the people and their achievements, and teaching the next generation about the price and value of freedom. And for me, the “teaching” part is what really sticks with me. It has grown into something amazing.” wreaths across america Executive Director Karen Wooster said on Friday. Breitbart News Daily.
The tribute quietly began in 1992 with the Worcester family and their business, Worcester Leith, and has been held annually for nearly 30 years. Worcester Lease lined up additional leases at the end of that year's holiday season and ended up partnering with a trucking company. The company and volunteers decorated graves at Arlington National Cemetery with 5,000 wreaths.
listen:
“A volunteer truck driver friend helped us load up and we headed down the mountain. It had a huge impact on my kids who went with my husband. It was a very personal experience. '' Worcester recalled, describing how he read out the veterans' names to pay their respects and placed wreaths at their graves.
“These are people. They're not just a bunch of stones,” she added. “And that's a long shot, because they literally did that up until 2005. A Pentagon photographer actually took a photo and put it on a website, and it went viral. And By January 2006, we were literally flooded. So we donated wreaths in 2006, and the attention was crazy.”
A sudden boom and thousands of requests across the United States eventually led to the founding of Wreaths Across America, a nonprofit organization in 2007 with the mission: honor. teach. “This organization has thousands of participating locations across the United States and has placed hundreds of thousands of wreaths on the graves of our nation's heroes.
“[Wreaths Across America] “It was literally founded on the suggestions of veterans, Gold Star families, and people who said to us, 'Please, we need to do this,'” she said. “…This year we have 4,908 locations across the country. We're also doing it overseas…We're looking for about 4 million people to come and lay a wreath on December 14th. It's unbelievable.”
Wreath Across America is an annualEscort to Arlington” will take place on Saturday, Dec. 7, and is scheduled to travel down the East Coast to Arlington National Cemetery for National Wreath Day on Dec. 14. On that day, ceremonies to commemorate the war dead will be held at approximately 5,000 locations across the country. The organization is still working on Sponsors and volunteers.
“I feel very humbled because as a mother of six and a grandmother of nine, I now have Gold Star moms who are my age and some older than me. Young, dear friends of mine, their children are buried in these cemeteries. Now it's a responsibility,” she said.
“One of the most important things we do is tell the stories of the men and women who served, what inspired them to step up, and teach the next generation of children the beauty of freedom. They value their freedom enough to step up,” she continued.
