USA Returns to WBC Finals with Narrow Victory Over Dominican Republic
The United States made its way back to the World Baseball Classic (WBC) finals on Sunday night, edging out the Dominican Republic with a score of 2-1 in a nail-biter in Miami.
Having previously lost to Japan in the 2023 WBC final, Team USA is now looking ahead to a potential rematch against either Venezuela or Italy, who are set to compete in the semifinals on Monday night.
Even though the box score might not tell the whole story, the atmosphere of this game—charged with the excitement of two of the best baseball teams—was palpable. Both teams delivered under pressure, matching the crowd’s enthusiasm and executing key plays when it counted.
Junior Caminero, the 22-year-old sensation from the Tampa Bay Rays, electrified the Dominican dugout and fans alike with a powerful home run off Paul Skeens in the second inning, sending the ball soaring over 400 feet into the left field stands.
Initially, it was Skeens who faced the challenge of pitching against an impressive Dominican lineup filled with major league talent. However, after two innings, Team USA’s younger talent began to emerge, altering the course of the game.
Manager Mark DeRosa made the strategic choice to start Gunnar Henderson at third base instead of veteran Alex Bregman, hoping Henderson’s familiarity with Luis Severino would pay off. This choice proved wise as Henderson tied the game with a booming home run over the right-center field fence.
Severino, who initially seemed to control the game, ended up being pulled after allowing another hit to Gregory Soto, setting the stage for Roman Anthony, a 21-year-old standout, to capitalize. He connected with a fastball down the middle, driving it over the center field wall for a 2-1 lead.
The U.S. dugout erupted with celebration as Anthony showcased his excitement with his teammates, a much-needed boost after a frustrating previous inning where they had two men on base but couldn’t score.
In the subsequent innings, both teams battled fiercely. Severino’s emotions were evident, especially when he made an impressive play by gunning out Fernando Tatis Jr. attempting to advance bases. The Dominicans managed just six hits, with Caminero’s homer being their only earned run.
The Americans were aware that a slim 2-1 lead was precarious, especially as the Dominican bullpen proved effective in keeping their bats quiet. But, under pressure once again, reliever David Bednar struck out Tatis and Ketel Marte in crucial moments to preserve the lead.
In a dramatic ninth inning, Padres closer Mason Miller encountered trouble when he walked Julio Rodriguez and later allowed Will Smith to move into scoring position. Still, with the game hanging in the balance, he managed to strike out Gerardo Perdomo, sealing the victory for Team USA and their spot in the finals of the WBC.
