The Dream Team Falls Short Again
The Dream Team ended their journey on a disappointing note.
Even Bryce Harper’s late-game efforts couldn’t turn the tide.
During the World Baseball Classic Championship held at Lawn Depot Park, the United States managed a comeback but ultimately lost to Venezuela, 3-2, marking their second consecutive failure to reach the title game.
With the score tied in the top of the ninth inning, Eugenio Suarez delivered an important RBI double off relief pitcher Garrett Whitlock.
“No one believed in Venezuela, but today we won the championship!” Suarez celebrated in a post-game interview with FOX. “This is a celebration for all Venezuelans.”
The U.S. team, boasting what some may argue is the most formidable batting lineup in WBC history, struggled significantly. Their hitting was off, and they had trouble making solid contact due to the Venezuelan pitching throughout the match.
Two of the three hits for the U.S. came from Harper, with the remaining one belonging to Bryce Turan. Captain Aaron Judge and Kyle Schwarber, batting third and fourth, went a combined 0-for-7 with six strikeouts.
“We came out of Arizona without getting any momentum in the two exhibition games we played. For some reason, we just couldn’t find our rhythm offensively,” coach Mark DeRosa explained. “They even had a two-hit shutout in the seventh inning tonight. Hats off to them; their comeback against Italy last night was impressive to watch.”
The Americans only managed two singles, not allowing a runner to reach first base until the eighth inning, when Harper launched a significant two-run homer 432 feet to center field.
Young Mets pitcher Nolan McLean had a decent outing but couldn’t fully contain Venezuela, surrendering two runs in 4 2/3 innings. Wylya Abreu hit a vital leadoff solo home run in the fifth inning.
“I felt good and proud of how I fought,” McLean assessed, rating his performance a 7 out of 10. “I was focused on filling up the zone and controlling what I could.” He also mentioned his pride in wearing the national colors.
“It’s rare to feel that kind of emotion and pride,” McLean said. “Representing your country like this is something special.”
After that, the U.S. bullpen kept Venezuela at bay until the ninth, when Whitlock faltered and allowed his first RBI of the tournament.
“I’m always hyped for the Yankees, but I’m really frustrated about this,” Judge admitted. “I’m looking forward to the next chance to don the red, white, and blue and get to work.”
Daniel Palencia closed out the ninth inning without allowing a run, securing Venezuela’s first WBC title.
“We feel the weight of the jersey, so we play with passion and love,” Suarez concluded.
