Teamsters Offer Money to GOP Candidates While President Claims Democrats Have Shunned 'Working People'

Republican support is gaining traction within unions, notably from Teamsters President Shawn O’Brien.

This year, the Teamsters, alongside the Democrats, Republicans, and the International Brotherhood of Independent Voters Education (DRIVE) PAC, have funneled close to $70,000 to Republican candidates. It’s interesting to note that this marks the second consecutive election cycle where Teamsters, traditionally aligned with the Democratic Party for nearly two decades, has shifted their financial support toward Republicans.

Kaladeniz, a spokesperson for the Teamsters, mentioned to Politico’s playbook that “Our members are workers who have cut their interests across the party line.” He emphasized the importance of engaging with various viewpoints rather than remaining in a bubble. After all, sometimes you need to step outside your usual circle to really get a sense of what’s happening.

The political branch of the Teamsters donated $5,000 to the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) and the House Republican Campaign Division, contributing a total of $62,000 to 22 House Republicans, including those from New York.

O’Brien has been vocal about his criticism of former President Joe Biden, arguing that the administration has failed to connect with the working class in the Democratic Party, even as Biden touts his presidency as the “most pro-union” in American history.

O’Brien said, “The place where Democrats lost… They fell in love with their prisoners, a lot of money, and big technology. They forgot about the communities they’re supposed to represent.” He pointed out that Democrats are not engaging with the people who truly represent their interests.

On a larger note, O’Brien remarked, “This whole election for the Democrats was based on social justice issues, right? But that narrative didn’t resonate with our members. They care more about having extra money in their pockets, better employment protections, and improved pensions.”

This sentiment has been echoed by O’Brien before, and he was notably present at the Republican National Convention in July 2024, where he aimed to forge stronger ties between the union and Republican candidates. Reports suggest that around 60% of Teamsters members favored Trump over former Vice President Kamala Harris during the last presidential election.

Trump has issued a call for labor votes as the 2024 election cycle unfolded, capturing a significant share of non-college voters from diverse racial backgrounds, particularly those earning under $50,000 annually.

Republican strategists are keen to hold onto working-class support as Democratic groups invest heavily to win back this voter base.

NRCC spokesperson Mike Marinella commented, “As we fight for their work and families, hardworking people across the country are aligning with Republicans. The Democrats have turned their backs on them with radical policies that don’t truly address their needs.”

Marinella added, “These voters are crucial for our majority, and we’ll do everything we can to secure their backing.” Meanwhile, the Teamsters’ political division continues financially supporting Democratic candidates and initiatives, contributing $200,000 to the Democratic Bar Association and $100,000 to the Democratic Governor’s Association during their latest fundraising efforts.

As of now, a Teamsters representative has not responded to inquiries from the news outlet.
