A tech executive from The New York Times has been shot and killed in what appears to be a tragic incident involving his elderly in-laws in California.
Jonathan McKinsey, 40, who served as the head of engineering for games player experience at the newspaper, was fatally wounded by 77-year-olds Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen in the parking lot of Dublin Sports Grounds around 3 p.m. on Saturday, according to local police.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found McKinsey with several gunshot wounds, shortly after a wave of 911 calls poured in. Emergency responders tried to provide assistance, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead on-site. Eyewitnesses claimed to have seen two masked individuals approach McKinsey, who reportedly took turns firing at him before a nearby officer apprehended them.
A comment on LinkedIn from Nathan Wu, who lists affiliation with UC Berkeley, expressed condolences, stating, “Rip buddy.”
Zhang was described as standing 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing around 165 pounds, while Chen, standing at 5 feet 2 inches, weighed only 110 pounds, as per inmate records from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.
Although the couple is from Dublin, they are also reported to have connections to Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Zhang and Chen have been booked into Santa Rita Jail in Alameda County on murder charges.
In addition to first-degree murder, they face several serious charges that include felony conspiracy, unlawfully discharging a firearm, and child endangerment that could potentially result in grave injuries or fatal consequences.
