Tech giant cuts more positions amid AI growth turmoil

The wave of layoffs continues in the tech industry, with Meta Inc. announcing significant job cuts in Silicon Valley.

The parent company of Facebook and Instagram has let go of 2,212 employees at its Menlo Park headquarters and an additional 213 at its Sunnyvale office, as revealed in a recent Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filing.

This WARN filing, which mandates employers to inform about mass layoffs, reflects the ongoing changes within the tech landscape.

In April, Meta indicated its intention to shrink its workforce by 10% in May, acknowledging the disruptive influence of artificial intelligence in the sector.

In a memo dated May 20, CEO Mark Zuckerberg mentioned that the company is undergoing a “transformation” and emphasized that future success cannot be assumed.

He stated, “AI is the most important technology of our lifetimes,” as reported by the New York Times. “Companies that lead the way will define the next generation.”

The recent filings highlight some of the largest job losses the Bay Area has seen in years. These layoffs come on top of previous announcements of more than 300 job cuts in Burlingame, 252 in San Francisco, and 81 in Fremont.

Software engineers, particularly those focused on AI products for businesses integrated within Meta’s platforms, have been the hardest hit by these layoffs.

Laid-off employees will receive 16 weeks of base pay, along with an additional two weeks for each year they were employed, according to reports.

Meta spokesperson Tracy Clayton noted via email that the changes are varied by team and include layoffs, closure of unfilled positions, and reassignment of employees to critical business needs.

The Bay Area, in particular, has faced substantial layoffs as the influence of AI reshapes the tech landscape.

This week, Webflow, a platform for website building and hosting, also announced job losses. CEO Linda Tong remarked, “The way businesses build for the web is rapidly changing,” and emphasized the role of AI in rethinking digital marketing strategies.

So far this year, over 140,000 tech jobs have been eliminated, with AI at the forefront of these changes.

Other major companies, like Intuit, Cisco, and LinkedIn, are also making significant workforce adjustments.
