Tech Professional Vaniya Agrawal Interrupts Microsoft Event Regarding Gaza, Once More

Pro-Palestinian Protests at Microsoft Build 2025 Conference

The recent Build 2025 conference in Seattle was marked by a series of protests from pro-Palestinian activists, including former Microsoft engineer Vaniya Agrawal. Agrawal, who has voiced strong criticism of Microsoft’s ties to Israel, disrupted notable events, even targeting the company’s 50th anniversary celebration in April. During the Build conference, Agrawal and fellow ex-employee Hosam Nasr interrupted a session focused on AI security, leading chants against the company’s leadership.

This protest reflects a broader movement within the tech industry, where activists are calling for greater accountability regarding technology contracts. Following her dismissal, Agrawal has emerged as a prominent figure in the campaign against corporate complicity in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, regularly sharing updates on social media since the conference.

In her resignation letter, Agrawal criticized Microsoft’s $133 million deal with the Israeli Ministry of Defense, asserting that the company’s AI and Azure Cloud Services help facilitate military actions against Palestinians. She wrote, “Microsoft Cloud and AI will enable Israeli forces to be more deadly and destructive in Gaza,” in a message disseminated company-wide. Her protests signify rising internal discord regarding Microsoft’s role in providing cloud infrastructure to the Israeli Ministry of Defense, especially amid increasing scrutiny of humanitarian issues related to the Gaza conflict. Notably, Microsoft has not publicly addressed the protests or the layoff situation.

The protests began on May 19 when employees interrupted CEO Satya Nadella during his keynote by chanting “Free Palestine” and demanding accountability for the company’s technology dealings. The following day, another protest followed when a Palestinian tech worker interrupted executive Jay Palif’s Azure AI presentation, proclaiming, “Cutting the bonds! Apartheid azure!”

Agrawal’s actions have triggered a significant wave of protests, underscoring the escalating tensions between tech companies and their employees concerning social responsibility and human rights.
