Proposed Changes to Immigration Funding by Sen. Ted Cruz
Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has put forward a plan to separate funding for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) from that of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). He raised this idea during a recent meeting, suggesting that Democrats have, in his view, become excessively extreme and irrational. Cruz expressed doubts about their ability to secure funding for DHS without implementing alterations to ICE, and proposed that these agencies could be funded “through reconciliation.”
“If that were the stance of the Democrats, I’d suggest funding ICE and CBP via reconciliation,” he remarked. He believes that Republicans could act relatively quickly—using just 50 votes—to address what he considers the Democratic issues with open borders.
Cruz also highlighted four domestic attacks carried out by Islamic extremist terrorists, emphasizing that DHS is tasked with preventing such acts. He noted that the agency has been facing a funding shortfall since February 14, largely due to the inability of lawmakers to reach a consensus on funding.
Reportedly, Cruz’s initiative is gaining traction, particularly as some Senate Republicans have expressed skepticism about reaching a broader agreement. For instance, Senator Thom Tillis (R-North Carolina) indicated he was open to Cruz’s approach.
In light of the spring break travel rush, Cruz pointed out that many airports have seen long lines at TSA checkpoints, advising travelers to arrive at least three to four hours early for their flights. He also mentioned that TSA employees are now facing potential paycheck issues due to the ongoing funding crisis for DHS.
“TSA staff are experiencing delays in pay for the second consecutive time,” Cruz stated, adding that over 300 have resigned from their positions.
In a recent post on Truth Social, former President Donald Trump issued a threat to deploy ICE agents to areas where they would perform security functions, such as making arrests of individuals in the U.S. illegally, should Democrats fail to fund DHS. He commented on the necessity of making the country and airports safe again, suggesting he might reassign ICE officers to enforce immigration laws, particularly focusing on specific groups.
