Details Emerge in Mississippi Couple’s Tragic Murder
The teenager charged in the shocking murders of an elderly couple in Mississippi was known to local law enforcement and had previously been hired by the victims for various tasks around their home.
Cordarius Hobbs, 17, is accused of killing Bill Blair, 74, and his wife, Carol, 71, in their home in Mendenhall, a small town of about 2,200 residents, located roughly 60 miles south of Jackson.
During a preliminary hearing in July, Hobbs’ family mentioned that he had done work for the Blairs, including house cleaning. An incident report from the Simpson County Sheriff’s Office described Hobbs as a “troubled juvenile” who was suspected in multiple local crimes.
According to the report, “When we first arrived on the scene, investigators believed that the suspect, Cordarius Hobbs, who is known for other home burglaries and car thefts in the area, may be involved.”
Hobbs’ grandfather, Billy Newsome, expressed disbelief about his grandson’s involvement, noting that it didn’t make sense for Hobbs to rob someone he had worked for. “Why would you go and rob the guy you work for?” Newsome questioned, referencing a standoff with police that occurred after contractors arrived to install a generator at the Blairs’ home.
Authorities discovered a parked car nearby around 10 a.m. that day with an open door and multiple firearms on the seats. Contractors had called the Simpson County Sheriff’s Department around 11:30 a.m. for a welfare check after no one emerged from the house.
Officers encountered gunfire when they arrived at the scene. Hobbs attempted to flee the house but was apprehended without any weapon in his possession.
Investigators reported finding Carol Blair in a fetal position, shot multiple times in the back of the head, while Bill Blair was found on the kitchen floor with significant injuries to his face.
A friend of the couple, Jason Buzbee, remarked on their character, describing them as selfless individuals. “They were all wonderful people. This is just a tragedy,” he said, reflecting the shock in the community.
Hobbs faces serious charges, including two counts of capital murder, robbery, and several counts of aggravated assault. His attorney, Zachary Vaughn, highlighted a lack of direct forensic evidence tying Hobbs to the murders, suggesting that other scenarios could explain the situation.
Moreover, during the confrontation, a sheriff’s deputy was shot but managed to recover, while Hobbs was also injured and briefly hospitalized. He remains in custody in Rankin County, with a bail request denied.
