Teen’s Attempted Carjacking Foiled by Off-Duty Trooper
A teenager armed with a knife tried to carjack a vehicle in Yonkers, New York, this past weekend, but, well, it seems he picked the wrong target.
This incident occurred on Sunday around 12:45 p.m. at a Mobil gas station on Kimball Avenue. An off-duty New York state trooper, who was fueling her car, reported the crime.
According to the police, as the officer was filling up, the teen approached her, threatened her with a knife, and attempted to get into the driver’s seat. However, the situation escalated quickly. Though off-duty, the officer was still armed and ready to defend herself.
In what can only be described as a swift response, the trooper fired a shot, hitting the suspect in the arm and causing a more serious injury to his torso. The teenager managed to flee the scene, driving the stolen vehicle recklessly, which included crashing over nearby structures before eventually abandoning the car in the parking lot of an adjacent apartment complex.
He sprinted away but didn’t get far. Local police quickly located him at another address on Midland Avenue and arrested him without further incident, recovering the knife at the time of the arrest.
The suspect, a 17-year-old from Yonkers, is facing charges including robbery in multiple degrees, as well as possession of a weapon and menacing.
Following the incident, the trooper who shot the suspect suffered minor injuries but was treated and released from the hospital. She has been a state trooper for 12 years.
Authorities have stated that this investigation will be led by the Yonkers Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit, while the New York State Police will conduct an internal review, but due to safety protocols, specific details about the officer involved will remain confidential.
