Morning Subway Incident in NYC
On Saturday morning, an elderly woman was pushed off a subway platform in New York City by an individual described as “emotionally disturbed.” The incident occurred just before 11:30 a.m. at the 57th Street and Seventh Avenue station, according to police reports.
Witnesses noted that the attack seemed random, leading to concerns about safety in the subway system. Thankfully, bystanders jumped onto the tracks and managed to pull the 70-year-old victim back to safety.
She was transported to Cornell Hospital, where she was reported to be in stable condition, although she had sustained a head injury.
The identity of the suspect has not yet been disclosed, but he is reportedly known to have emotional issues. Authorities have arrested a suspect, with charges expected to follow.
Two hotel employees in midtown expressed their unease about subway safety. One of them, Maria Giannousos, 61, shared, “Now that I’m older, I’m more concerned about subway safety and I try to stay away from the edges.” She added that she puts her life in God’s hands during commutes.
Irjana Girezan, 60, echoed her sentiments, calling the attack “scary.” She mentioned the prevalence of homeless individuals in the subway, adding to her worries. “But we have to go to work, so we have to take the train,” she noted. “I always look straight to God for protection.”
Paul Corey, a psychiatrist, reflected on his own growing concerns regarding subway safety. He noted that he tries to stay away from the edges and appreciates that more barriers are being installed to enhance safety.
The incident adds to a troubling history of subway violence in the city.
- In May, another elderly man tragically lost his life after being pushed down a staircase by a murder suspect.
- Back in March, a man was charged after allegedly pushing an elderly individual onto the tracks.
- In a similar attack in September, a great-grandfather suffered a fractured vertebra after being shoved onto the tracks.
- And in October 2022, a man was pushed onto the subway tracks, though bystanders managed to rescue him just in time.
