Teen Charged After Shooting Incident at Pride Fest
A teenage shooter has been charged with attempted murder following an incident during Pride Fest, where a stray bullet hit a bystander after he accidentally shot a female companion in the head. The 17-year-old suspect was taken into custody around 4 PM on Monday and is facing charges of felony assault and criminal possession of a weapon related to the violence that occurred on June 29 at Sheridan Square.
The chaos unfolded around 10:15 PM when a 16-year-old girl, accompanied by friends, fired at a man who was part of a different group. Officers noted that her aim wasn’t accurate; instead of hitting the intended target, a bullet traveled about 100 feet and struck a 17-year-old girl from New Jersey, who was simply visiting with a friend.
During this altercation, a 17-year-old male accomplice of the shooter fired a second shot at a group that included the targeted man. Unfortunately, he accidentally hit his companion, the 16-year-old girl, in the head, causing serious injuries, according to police reports.
The injured girl was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where her condition was listed as critical. Interestingly, her firearm was found lying next to her at the scene.
At the same time, the innocent bystander who was shot in the thigh was reported to be in serious condition as well.
Star Lopez, 46, whose daughter was caught in the crossfire, expressed how challenging the situation has been. She mentioned feeling emotionally drained but relieved that her daughter survived the ordeal.
The arrest of the 17-year-old shooter was confirmed pending further legal actions as of Tuesday.
