Long Island Teen Offers Free Meals for Veterans Year-Round

A teenager from Long Island has established a business providing complimentary meals to veterans and military personnel—not just on Veterans Day, but throughout the entire year.

Will Burrell, an 18-year-old founder of Will’s Smash Burger in Mattituck, NY, recently shared insights on “America’s Newsroom” about how his restaurant serves veterans every day.

Burrell, who started his venture less than a year ago as a high school senior, says the business began after he organized a charity event. “We held a sit-down dinner for 60 attendees and raised $1,500 for the Gary Sinise Foundation,” he noted, adding that the funds help support firefighters in Los Angeles.

His signature burger, made with brisket and topped with bacon jam, strikes a balance of sweetness, which he describes as “a little sweet, but not too sweet.” At Will’s Smashburger, not only do veterans receive free meals, but the staff also writes encouraging notes on the packaging.

One bag shared by Burrell carried the message, “Someone thinks you’re the best.” “We aim to promote mental health, positivity, and awareness,” he explained. “I genuinely enjoy giving back and witnessing the smiles on people’s faces when they read those bags.”

Burrell recounted a memorable experience from earlier this summer when a group of U.S. Coast Guard members unexpectedly entered the restaurant. Their reaction upon learning about the free meals was one of delight. “The timing was perfect; they ended up enjoying a burger right after we announced we’d be offering meals for veterans,” he said, smiling at the memory of their happiness.

Looking ahead, Burrell has applied to Cornell University and is awaiting their response. Notably, Will’s Smashburger isn’t alone in supporting veterans. Other restaurants, including Applebee’s and Denny’s, are also offering free meals or deals for active-duty military personnel this Veterans Day.
