Teenager Sentenced for Triple Murder in New Hampshire
A New Hampshire teenager, Eric Sweeney, was sentenced to nearly a century in prison for the 2022 killings of his step-sister and her two young sons. The now 19-year-old, who was just 16 at the time of the incident, admitted to fatally shooting 25-year-old Cassandra Sweeney, along with her four-year-old son Benjamin and 23-month-old Mason, at their home in Concord.
Sweeney had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in August, after being initially charged with first-degree murder.
During the sentencing, which took place on a recent Friday, prosecutors requested consecutive sentences amounting to 35 years for Cassandra’s murder and 40 years for each boy’s death. However, they mentioned that a reduction of up to 18 years could be possible if certain conditions tied to education, mental health, and good behavior were met.
Attorney General Bethany Duland stated, “Benjamin and Mason represent reasons why crimes against children should face the harshest penalties.” She emphasized their innocence, remarking that they had not done anything wrong and deserved individual sentences for their tragic losses.
On the other hand, Sweeney’s defense team argued that a life sentence without the possibility of parole could be seen as inhumane, especially considering the trauma he experienced during his childhood, marked by instability and exposure to drugs and violence.
They revealed that, at the age of six, Eric was seen alone on the street asking strangers for food and shoes. They also described his upbringing as one filled with numerous challenges, which they argue contributed to his actions.
In a memorandum submitted to the court, Sweeney’s attorneys appealed for some leniency, stating that he had loved those he harmed and would have to live with the consequences of his actions for the rest of his life. They mentioned that he had lived with his step-brother Sean and Sean’s family for approximately three years as their guardian. Tensions had escalated in the months leading to the tragedy, with Sean contemplating making Eric move out.
On the day of the shootings, it is alleged that Eric retrieved a handgun from a locked safe and shot Cassandra and the boys in the home. Cassandra was struck in the head, while both boys suffered similar fates. In the moments prior to the crime, she was reportedly engaged in recording a lighthearted video for her husband, capturing the joyful moments with her children.
Immediately after the incident, Eric called Sean and claimed that someone had broken in and harmed them. Following this phone call, he was seen driving away in Cassandra’s vehicle, while authorities worked to understand the situation.
In his statements to investigators, Eric described hearing a noise before the shootings and claimed he saw the aftermath in the home when he escalated the situation. He did not seek help from people nearby, and in the chaotic aftermath, he reportedly discarded the weapon before returning home.
