Kennywood Amusement Park Implements New Chaperone Policy

Kennywood, an amusement park near Pittsburgh with a rich history spanning almost 130 years, is changing its summer chaperone policy. This decision comes in response to rising incidents of violence and disorderly behavior among teenagers at amusement parks nationwide.

Starting June 12, all guests aged 15 and under will need to be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or another adult supervision at all times. This measure will be in place until September 7, according to an official announcement from the park.

Several recent brawls, including one involving a crowd of up to 100 people on the opening day of Six Flags St. Louis, have heightened concerns. This incident required police intervention and led to an early closure of the park.

Kennywood’s policy shift follows another clash at Hersheypark, where 55 individuals, primarily minors, were charged after a large fight on April 3.

The company stated, “This proactive step reflects our ongoing commitment to preserving the welcoming atmosphere that has characterized Kennywood for nearly 130 years,” according to a spokesperson.

In a Facebook message, Kennywood noted, “We are aware of numerous social media posts discussing unauthorized gatherings in our parks, and we do not tolerate any disruptive actions.”

The updated guidelines aim to work alongside responsible adults to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment. Kennywood emphasized that the responsibility for children lies with their respective guardians.

Under the new rules, guests unable to demonstrate they are 16 years or older will not be allowed entry without an approved chaperone, who must be at least 21 and provide a valid ID. Each chaperone can supervise up to six guests under 15.

Chaperones need to be present upon entering the park and must remain throughout the visit, though they don’t need to stay physically next to the minors at all times. It’s important that younger guests have a local chaperone available during their entire stay.

This policy extends previous summer chaperone regulations, changing the age requirement for supervision from 17 and under to 15 and under, and applies all day instead of just from 4 p.m.

Recently, incidents referred to as “teen takeovers” have resulted in chaos at public areas across various cities. These gatherings, often ignited by social media, have led to fights and law enforcement actions.

In light of safety concerns, Hersheypark has instituted a photo re-entry verification following disruptions during its opening weekend.

Kennywood plans to enforce the new chaperone policy at entry points and throughout the park. Any unaccompanied minors found inside may be asked to leave.

Organized groups, such as schools and summer camps, remain exempt from these rules as they have their own chaperone protocols in place.

Many have applauded the park for its decisive actions online. One Reddit user commented, “Good for pre-empting potential problems.” Another remarked that such behavior among youth is becoming too frequent and needs addressing.

A third user expressed support for the initiative, wishing for more benefits for chaperones who are not planning to ride attractions.

Kennywood, situated in West Mifflin, is about 16 miles southeast of downtown Pittsburgh. Established in 1898, it is one of only two amusement parks in the U.S. recognized as a National Historic Landmark, the other being Rye Playland in New York.

During the summer, all visitors must undergo a weapons detection process at the entrance, and only bags meeting specific size restrictions will be allowed, with exceptions for medical and diaper bags.

This beloved Pennsylvania institution is famously known for classic attractions, including the Jack Rabbit roller coaster and the popular Potato Patch fries.
