Teen gunman Austin Thompson will admit to five murders: lawyer

Teen Pleads Guilty in 2022 North Carolina Shooting Spree

A 15-year-old boy, Austin Thompson, who was involved in a tragic shooting incident that left his older brother, a police officer, and three others dead, pleaded guilty on Wednesday. However, his lawyers did not provide a reasoning behind his actions. They attributed his inability to explain his behavior to a brain injury he sustained during his arrest.

Now 18, Thompson will bypass a trial for the mass shooting that occurred in Raleigh and will directly proceed to the sentencing phase, as noted by his attorney in a court document.

The defense cited a brain injury that was acquired when he shot himself in the head while being captured after a confrontation with police in a wooded area.

According to the legal petition, “Austin cannot explain why he committed the shooting due to severe brain injuries, but he has always admitted to the act.” It also mentions his recognition of the pain caused to both his family and the families of the victims.

Thompson aims to prevent further trauma to the community and the victims, as expressed in the petition.

He understands, as stated by his attorneys, that he cannot change his past actions. By pleading guilty and moving to sentencing, he hopes to facilitate some sense of peace and closure for the victims and their families.

The horrific event took place in the Hedingham neighborhood of Raleigh in October 2022. Thompson, at the time just 15, went on a rampage that resulted in the deaths of five individuals, and even a dog, with two more injured in the process.

He initially attacked his brother, 16-year-old James Roger Thompson, before turning on neighbors, killing off-duty Raleigh police officers Gabriel Torres, 29, and Nicole Connors, 52, along with two others—Mary Marshall, 34, and Susan Carnuts, 49—on a nearby boardwalk.

His motivations for these actions remain unknown.

Footage from body cameras showed the chaotic moments as police pursued him into a barn, where another shootout ensued and Thompson ended up injuring an officer. Hours later, authorities found him with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Evidence gathered indicated he was wearing camouflage and carried a backpack with a handgun, knife, and shotgun shells.

Earlier this year, Thompson’s father received probation after pleading guilty to improperly storing a firearm.

Due to the traumatic brain injury, Thompson experiences seizures. Recently, his lawyers requested leniency during the trial after he suffered a seizure while in prison. They expressed concern that pre-trial stress might have contributed to this incident.

Thompson faces multiple charges, including five counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and more. He is set to plead guilty to all charges in a North Carolina Superior Court on Wednesday, after which a sentencing date will be determined.
