A 19-year-old murder suspect, who allegedly confessed to having violent fantasies, is charged with stalking and killing 73-year-old artist and author Rachel Summers in a random attack in California. Tyler Liebert was already out on bail for another felony when the incident occurred.
On Monday, he is accused of stabbing Summers outside the Capitola Mall while she was walking to the bank after picking up her paycheck. The Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Office has filed court documents suggesting he be held without bail, and his arraignment has been postponed until July 29 due to requests from his attorneys. He remains in custody without bail.
This tragic incident hit hard in the local arts community, where Summers had been deeply involved. Heather Richman, the president of Art of Santa Cruz, described Summers as a critical part of their organization, saying she was like a right-hand person who kept everything organized.
Prosecutors revealed that Liebert, who lived in modest circumstances, took an Uber to Cabrillo College on the day of the attack. While in the cafeteria, he experienced a troubling “desire to kill,” according to court documents.
He later took a bus to the Capitola Mall, looking for potential victims. Before the attack on Summers, he considered targeting an older man but backed off, thinking it might be too risky. Eventually, he located Summers near Trader Joe’s, approaching her while hiding a knife.
Once he was close enough, he reportedly pulled out a knife, chased her down, and stabbed her multiple times—over eleven wounds in total, with injuries to her back, forearm, and chest. Richman remarked how the randomness of the attack added to the shock for those who knew Summers.
Summers was far more than just a victim; she was an established artist, a mother and grandmother, and a considerable figure at Art of Santa Cruz. She is survived by her daughter and grandson, who reside nearby, as well as her beloved cat, Ivy.
In the wake of her passing, fellow artists have been proactive in offering to help take care of Ivy, showing the community’s support and solidarity. Memorial arrangements for Summers are expected to involve many of the 60 artists associated with the gallery.
The killing occurred in Santa Cruz County, known for being one of the wealthiest areas in the United States and heavily leaning Democratic. Although crime rates in unincorporated parts of the county are generally low, property crimes have risen significantly in tourist-heavy areas.
