Teen Arrested for Threatening School Violence

A 16-year-old student at Benjamin Cardozo High School in New York City was taken into custody on Thursday for allegedly making threats online about a potential school shooting, according to officials.

The student from Queens was found on campus with a loaded semi-automatic handgun, which led to the intervention of the NYPD, effectively preventing what could have been a tragedy.

The FBI had alerted the NYPD about the teenager’s intentions, confirming that they acted promptly in response to this critical information.

The NYPD was also reportedly searching for an individual accused of assaulting an off-duty police officer and stealing a firearm, with some accomplices already apprehended.

“Today, we were informed of the life-threatening situation involving Benjamin Cardozo High School,” the statement from the FBI noted.

“NYPD officers were dispatched to local high schools to neutralize this potential threat, and the operation was successful. This quick response underscores the importance of collaboration and information sharing to protect our communities and students from unnecessary violence.”

Reports indicate that a moderator on Instagram alerted the FBI after discovering a post where the teen had shared an image of a mannequin sketch with the caption “TS GMT Boutta shoots school.”

Investigators connected the social media accounts back to students and issued warnings to the NYPD.

In less than a few hours, the school’s safety officer, along with responding police, located the teen carrying a handgun and multiple cell phones—including those locked inside a school-issued pouch.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tish confirmed during a press conference that the student had no prior criminal record, yet they were found with a loaded gun when safely detained.

“I’m honestly shaken as a mother of two young boys in school,” Tish remarked.

She continued, “As your police chief, I will ensure the NYPD does everything possible to keep our children safe.”

Mayor Eric Adams commended the swift actions of law enforcement, describing it as “the perfect example of how the system can successfully operate.”

Nevertheless, he cautioned that this incident reveals deeper societal issues.

“We could have had a very different press conference today. A 16-year-old was prepared to shoot people at school,” Adams stated. “Our youth are on a perilous path, and we must all intervene to provide guidance. They shouldn’t be swayed by negative influences online.”

“Today, we could have saved countless lives among students and staff. It’s unsettling to think about another announcement in such a tragic context. This serves as a real wake-up call for our city and the nation,” Adams concluded.
