Prosecutors allege that a teenager in upstate New York has been accused of murdering his 14-year-old girlfriend after she revealed she was pregnant, stating “has nothing to do with the baby.”
Now 17, he faces double murder charges more than two years after the body of his former girlfriend, Samantha Humphrey, was recovered from the Mohawk River.
Humphrey, who was originally from Schenectady, was missing for three months before her remains were found in the river, where it was determined she had been strangled.
The accused, whose identity is protected due to his age, reportedly admitted to being with her the night of the incident and engaging in an argument, as noted by Humphrey’s mother, Jaclyn, in a statement to CBS6.
“Samantha thinks she’s pregnant and believes that this was her father one day,” Schenectady County District Attorney Robert M. Carney shared during a news conference on Wednesday.
The DA also mentioned, “He claimed he had nothing to do with her baby and she removed it.”
Charges against the teen include theft and second-degree murder, according to court documents.
Given his status as a juvenile, he could face a maximum of 15 years in prison, but will transition to adult court if he turns 25 before the case is resolved.
He pleaded not guilty in Schenectady County Court and has been placed in the Juvenile Detention Center. The trial is expected to be delayed until next year, as indicated by the DA’s office.
Reportedly, Humphrey was last seen alive on November 25, 2022, dressed in a black and pink puffy jacket, bell-bottom jeans, and Timberland boots.
In the first week after her disappearance, her cell phone and a jacket matching what she was wearing were found, raising concerns about her fate.
