Teen loses life at Hampton Beach following father's effort to save him from rip current

Teen Drowns at Hampton Beach, New Hampshire

A tragic incident occurred at Hampton Beach in New Hampshire, where a 17-year-old boy drowned while swimming with his family. Officials reported that the teen and his father, aged 61, were both caught in strong currents on Sunday evening, leading to the father attempting a rescue.

Authorities received a report regarding a possible drowning around 6:45 PM, according to the Marine Patrol of New Hampshire State Police. The father, who went into the water to save his son, also began experiencing distress. While lifeguards were not immediately present, they were quickly called back and responded to the situation.

Both the father and son were brought to shore, but despite efforts to resuscitate the teen, he was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. His father remains in stable condition, although officials have yet to release their names.

The Marine Patrol is actively investigating the incident and has asked anyone with information to reach out to Sergeant Nicholas Haroutunian via phone or email.

Swimming Restrictions Enforced

Due to the hazardous water conditions, beach access for swimming at Hampton Beach has been temporarily closed. Officials plan to reassess the situation by Monday. This tragic event highlights the ongoing dangers faced by beachgoers, especially given the recent surge in rescues—over 140 people rescued in just the past week due to strong rip currents exacerbated by tropical depression Dexter. As Hurricane Erin approaches, additional warnings have been issued regarding potentially dangerous waves.

Patrick Murphy, chief of the New Hampshire State Beach Patrol, noted the alarming frequency of rescues, stating, “One day we had 40 to 60 rescues, and over 140 in a week is unusual.” Authorities are stressing the unpredictability of conditions that could lead to such emergencies.

According to the American Lifesaving Association, rip currents are responsible for over 100 deaths yearly. Tens of thousands of individuals are rescued from these currents every year. Lifeguards emphasize that the key to surviving a rip current is to remain calm and swim parallel to the shore instead of fighting against the current.

Assistant officials encourage beachgoers to be aware of their surroundings and the signs regarding water safety. The best course of action in a rip current situation is not to panic. As Murphy advised, “You will wear yourself out if you fight it. Stay calm and swim parallel to the coast.”
