A well-known cliff diving location in San Diego witnessed an incident this past weekend, as a 17-year-old boy had a frightening experience that was recorded on video.
The footage captures the boy’s run-up to the jump before he dives off Sunset Cliffs. A crowd gathered, phones drawn, to document the moment. But instead of a graceful entry, he hit a rock ledge before falling into the ocean.
Rescue efforts were prompt, and he was brought back to shore and transported to a hospital shortly after the incident, around 5:16 p.m., according to San Diego Fire Rescue Public Information Officer Candace Hadley.
At this point, the extent of his injuries remains uncertain.
It’s important to note that cliff diving is against city regulations. The law prohibits jumping or diving from any natural or man-made structure that is more than five feet above the ocean or Mission Bay.
“We want both locals and visitors to appreciate the San Diego coastline safely. Please refrain from the cliff edges, heed all warnings, and avoid jumping into the ocean from elevated spots,” commented Officer Hadley.
Despite the risks and the legal restrictions, the area near Sunset Cliffs Boulevard has long attracted thrill-seekers, with many people jumping from the arch there. According to informal estimates, fines or arrests are possible for those who engage in these risky activities.
Just a few months ago, part of the cliff near the arch crumbled, prompting safety concerns from experts in the field.
As one local resident, Raekwon Goldsmith, observed, “This is not for those who haven’t jumped before. It’s a great spot for experienced individuals, but beginners really should think twice.” He added that understanding the risks is crucial when jumping from significant heights.
Tragically, some have lost their lives at this location, including a tragedy involving a 15-year-old boy who was submerged for almost an hour back in 2019.
A report indicated that between 2005 and 2017, the Sunset Cliffs area experienced an average of five deaths or serious injuries annually.
