Tragic School Shooting in Turkey

A 14-year-old boy, suspected of killing at least nine individuals and injuring 13 others in a Turkish secondary school, passed away on Wednesday, according to various media and official reports.

The attacker reportedly used a firearm that belonged to his father, a former police officer, to execute the violent act. This incident marks the second school shooting in Turkey within a short period, as noted by regional governor Mukerem Unlua.

“A student arrived at the school with a gun, believed to be his father’s, concealed in his backpack. He burst into two different classrooms, firing indiscriminately and causing both injuries and fatalities,” Unlua mentioned to reporters, as per multiple coverage sources.

Turkey’s Interior Minister, Mustafa Şifci, indicated that among the deceased, eight were students and one was a teacher.

Despite the tragic event, Şifci emphasized that this was an isolated incident and not indicative of a terrorist act. The shooting occurred at Aysel Chark Middle School in Kahramanmaras, located approximately 140 miles from a high school where another student took his own life after injuring 16 people a day prior.

Gun violence is relatively rare in Turkey, with about 2.6 deaths per 100,000 residents annually, compared to 14.5 in the United States. The process to acquire a firearm requires individuals to be at least 21 years old, in addition to passing extensive medical and background checks. However, it seems that professionals like law enforcement personnel face fewer hurdles in obtaining firearms.

With two mass shootings occurring in just two days, the Turkish government urged the public to refrain from spreading misinformation and to maintain social harmony.

The country’s Ministry of Communications also addressed the situation, emphasizing the importance of careful management and the need to protect the psychological well-being of children. They urged news organizations to handle reporting on such incidents with extreme caution, as they could pave the way for the spread of misinformation.

In response to the shooting, Türkiye’s Interior Ministry has assigned eight inspectors to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
