Teen Gunman Killed in Military Raid on Cartel Leader

A 15-year-old gunman, who was also the bodyguard for his uncle—a prominent cartel leader in Michoacan—showcased his lifestyle on social media. His life came to a tragic end during a violent confrontation with military forces in a raid targeting the leadership of the Carteles Unidos. Both he and his uncle were killed in the gunfire.

This military operation occurred recently at a ranch close to Tocumbo, Michoacan. Authorities attempted to capture Luis Enrique “R5 or El Guicho” Barragan Chavez, who had taken charge of a criminal group called Cartel De Los Reyes after the arrest of another leader, Alfonso “Poncho La Quiringa” Fernandez Magallanes.

According to reports, El Guicho engaged in a firefight with military personnel, resulting in the deaths of both him and his unnamed bodyguard.

Confirmed by insiders, the bodyguard was identified as 15-year-old Jesus “Chuchito Nini” Sandoval, who was the nephew of R5. Sandoval was not just a bodyguard; he was also involved in the cartel as a messenger. It’s worth noting that he was the sibling of Antonio “Tercer Elemento” Sandoval, a notable figure within the organization.

Despite his young age, Sandoval actively flaunted his life online. He operated two Instagram accounts, @Chuchito_Pistolas and @chuchito_pistolas_666, where he posted images of firearms and fellow cartel members.

Analysis shows that his social media presence spans back two years, highlighting his transition from a young soccer player to someone deeply engrossed in the cartel lifestyle, notably with an interest in weapons and rooster fights.

There’s a concerning trend in Michoacan, as cartels have been known to recruit minors. In a particularly disturbing case in 2020, the now-incarcerated cartel boss Cesar “El Boto” Sepulveda even went so far as to pay local children to stand guard at the entrances of towns as human shields against rival factions and law enforcement—a tactic that has received little attention from the Mexican government.
