Tragic Death of Texas Teen at Olympic National Park
A Texas teenager fell to his death from a 50-foot waterfall while celebrating his high school graduation in Olympic National Park, Washington.
Grant Harridge, who graduated from Vanguard College Preparation in Waco just a week ago, was enjoying a trip with friends when the accident occurred. On June 8, he slipped while walking on rocks above Solduc Falls and fell into the water below, as reported by the National Park Service.
Witnesses saw him resurface briefly before sinking again. His father, Brad Harridge, a pastor, confirmed the heartbreaking news in a Facebook post.
“Grant was doing what he loved—hiking around Olympic National Park—when this tragic accident happened,” he wrote. “He was full of life, and we intend to honor him by living life to the fullest moving forward.”
Search and rescue teams were deployed, but they could not locate Grant’s body until the following day, finding him completely submerged below the waterfalls.
Known for his adventurous spirit, Grant had hopes of following in his parents’ footsteps by attending Baylor University in Waco. His father recalled, “He wanted to attend Baylor his whole life. His mom and I graduated from there, and she still works at the university.”
Authorities are facing challenges in recovering his body due to high water flow in the canyon, which has been about eight feet deep. Rangers have attempted the recovery twice, but rapid snowmelt has complicated their efforts.
The National Park Service stated, “We’re prioritizing a safe recovery as soon as conditions allow, continuously monitoring the situation.”
Baylor University has since honored Grant, recognizing him as a bright light among the freshman class of 2029. A memorial service was held, showing support for the grieving family.
In memory of Grant, a scholarship has been established at Baylor University. The poster for the scholarship notes, “Grant’s life on earth ended too soon, but through your generosity, his impact will continue to affect generations.”
