Tragic Shooting at Bend Elementary School
On Thursday afternoon, a 16-year-old boy opened fire at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, resulting in the deaths of three children and a teacher. A parent intervened, fatally shooting the gunman, according to reports from police.
The children who lost their lives were aged 5, 8, and 11. Additionally, a 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher suffered critical injuries and were transported to St. Charles Medical Center for medical attention.
Governor Tina Kotek of Oregon commended the bravery of the school staff, first responders, and the community member who, as described, “heroically intervened to stop further loss of life.”
Reports indicate that the parent, having witnessed the teen shoot through locked doors with a long gun, chased the shooter into the school. The parent “engaged” the suspect just before police arrived on the scene.
Authorities credited the parent’s quick action as crucial in preventing additional casualties. A source mentioned to Fox News that the parent “definitely prevented more deaths,” and it was noted that the parent had a concealed carry permit.
Emergency dispatch audio captured a statement confirming that the shooter had likely been neutralized by a father at the school.
Officers reacted rapidly, arriving within three minutes of the first emergency call. Shortly thereafter, they were informed that a community member had shot the suspect.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz provided details in an evening press conference, stating that officers confirmed the suspect was deceased upon entry into the school. They then ensured there were no further threats before administering emergency aid to the victims.
Kotek offered her thoughts to those involved in the tragic event, acknowledging the emotional toll their actions would carry.
As of now, investigators are still determining how far the shooter went inside the school and whether he had any prior connections to the school. They are also looking into whether the teen had previously attended Silver Rail Elementary.
The first emergency call was made at 12:59 PM by an individual in a vehicle, claiming they were shot at by someone wielding a long gun. Following this, numerous calls were made concerning a shooter in the school. Law enforcement instructed the school to lock down at 1:01 PM, and the first responders were on-site by 1:02 PM.
Tragically, five individuals were found dead, including the shooter, and families of the victims have since been notified. Authorities from the Bend Police Department, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Redmond police, Oregon State Police, as well as federal law enforcement, coordinated the evacuation of the school building room by room.
Students and staff were taken on school buses to Journey Church to reunite with their families. All activities within the Bend-La Pine school district were canceled the following day.
Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook announced that crisis counselors would be available at the Central Library for any students, families, employees, or community members seeking support, with plans for another press conference scheduled for Friday afternoon.
