Mason, Tennessee, Approves Immigrant Detention Facility Conversion
The town of Mason, Tennessee, has decided to convert a former prison into an immigrant detention center. Corecivic, a private entity, will manage the operation once the contract is finalized, as reported. This facility has been dormant since its closure in 2021, which followed a directive from then-President Joe Biden aimed at halting contracts for civil detention facilities.
Interestingly, just a few days later, on January 20, President Donald Trump reversed Biden’s directive.
At a recent meeting, many protesters voiced their concerns. Mason’s Deputy Mayor, Reynald Givhan, admitted he had doubts before casting his vote in favor of Corecivic but ultimately opted against supporting the contract for a second time.
Mason’s population stands at around 1,337, with a median household income of about $47,000. The local mayor, Eddie Norman, expressed that the facility represents a business opportunity for the town, emphasizing his focus on revitalizing the local economy, particularly in terms of employment. Interestingly, he himself is an immigrant, which adds a layer of complexity to the situation.
However, local residents seem to carry mixed feelings. There are complaints about Corecivic due to its history of legal issues, including some hefty fines and lawsuits related to inmate treatment. Since 2022, concerns over the company’s operations have been mounting, with records indicating more than $4.4 million spent on resolving various lawsuits, including serious incidents involving inmate fatalities.
During Trump’s administration, there was a push to enhance immigrant deportation efforts, prompting some states to collaborate with the federal government on expanding detention facilities. However, challenges have emerged, such as a federal judge blocking construction on a facility in Florida.
Only recently, ICE announced a partnership with Indiana to also house immigrants at Miami Correctional Center, reflecting a continued trend of expanding detention capacities across the nation.
Fox News Digital attempted to reach Corecivic for comments but did not receive a response before publication.
