Firefighters receive calls to rescue cat stranded in a tree, but firefighters in Kingsport, Tennessee, receive a call to rescue a dog stranded in a tree this week due to catastrophic flooding from Helen. We responded to the report.
Working with the Murfreesboro Police Department's K-9 search team, a dog was found alive and stranded about 20 feet up in a tree three days after the flood. According to the Kingsport Fire Department.
The tree is near the Nolichucky River in Washington County, where the river flooded during Helen's historic rainstorm, resulting in deaths and dozens of rescuers in the area.
Helen's devastating impact left more than 10 people dead in northeast Tennessee, including two in Washington County.
Firefighters were excited to bring the dog down, have it tested for a microchip, and hope to be reunited with its family.
“She must be missing,” one says.
Several firefighters said, “He's a good kid.'' “Hello, puppy.”
Despite some harrowing rescues and difficult days after Helen's deadly floods, firefighters had a sense of humor about this rescue and a happy ending. A neighbor asked me if I often get calls for dogs up in the trees.
“Sometimes it’s actually for the cats,” the crew member replies.
The dog was turned over to local animal control and will be reunited with its family on Thursday, the fire department said.
