Tennessee State University shooting leaves at least 1 dead, 9 injured: police

At least one person was killed and several others were injured when a suspect opened fire near Tennessee State University (TSU) in Nashville on Saturday night.

The Nashville Metropolitan Police Department (MNPD) said the shooting occurred at approximately 5:10 p.m., just before the start of TSU's homecoming football game against Eastern Illinois University at Nissan Stadium.

“Multiple victims were injured in a shooting at Jefferson Street and North 27th Avenue,” police wrote on Facebook at 6:30 p.m. “The scene is safe and the victims are being treated at an area hospital.” I wrote.

Police said in an update that a 24-year-old man was killed, bringing the number of victims to 10.

“At this time, there are 10 confirmed victims involved in the shooting, one of whom has died,” MNPD Public Information Officer Brooke Reese said at a news conference.

“Five of them were transported by the Nashville Fire Department to local hospitals,” she said. “The other five people were dropped off in a private vehicle.”

Reese said the three non-critical victims were boys and were taken to a nearby children's hospital.

She emphasized that at least one of the injured was suspected of being involved in the shooting.
