Earlier this month, British politician and pro-life advocate Anne Widecombe was killed at her home in Devon, England.
Joshua Kelly, a noted left-wing activist, has been charged with the murder of the 78-year-old Reform UK spokesperson. He was formally indicted on Monday, raising serious concerns about the motives behind this tragic event.
Frank Ferguson, a prosecutor with the Crown Prosecution Service’s Special Crime and Counter-Terrorism Unit, mentioned: “Following the police investigation into the death of Ann Widecombe in Haytor, Dartmoor, we have decided to charge Joshua Kelly with murder.” The investigation is ongoing, specifically looking into possible links to political or terrorist motives.
Ferguson added that law enforcement collaborated closely with the prosecution to ensure enough evidence was available to take the case to court.
In a courtroom session on Tuesday, shocking details about the assassination were revealed, with Mr. Kelly present but advised not to respond. Prosecutor Kashif Malik indicated that a kitchen camera recorded the horrific attack, where Mr. Widecombe’s body was found by a gardener the following day.
According to reports, the footage allegedly shows Mr. Kelly, dressed in black gloves and wielding a hammer, entering Widecombe’s home while she was having lunch. He purportedly questioned her about her bank card and ID before attacking her.
Malik pointed out that the suspect violently struck Widecombe in the head 21 times, ultimately pushing her to the ground, stealing her wallet, and fleeing the scene.
Kelly was initially detained on July 10 on suspicion of murder, which was initially assumed to be part of a failed robbery. After a brief release, he was re-arrested, further implicated in potential terrorist-related activities.
Lawrence Taylor, the head of the National Counter-Terrorism Police, noted that new details had emerged about the attack, indicating it was indeed premeditated.
Reports indicate that a search of Kelly’s residence uncovered news articles regarding Reform UK and its leader, Nigel Farage, alongside the party’s immigration stance, suggesting he harbored deep-seated animosity towards them.
Kelly was captured on surveillance footage leaving his home in Rotherham, approximately 470 miles from Widecombe’s house, shortly before the murder.
Farage commented about the situation, referring to Kelly as a far-left activist, involved in protests and hostile towards opposing viewpoints. He described Kelly as someone obsessed with Soviet ideals and expressed his belief that authorities might have been aware of him.
Reform UK spokesperson Zia Yusuf expressed frustration at the media’s lack of coverage regarding Kelly’s background and motives, questioning why there’s still so little known about him after such a brutal crime.
The severity of Kelly’s alleged crime means the case has been handed over to the Old Bailey, as it was deemed too serious for a hearing at Westminster Magistrates Court, where he is expected to appear later.
