A catastrophic terrorist attack on a tourist shelter in Kashmir on Tuesday killed 26 people, creating new tensions in uneasy relations between India and Pakistan.
The attack targeted a Himalayan tourist destination called Farragum, also known as “Little Switzerland,” as it remained primarily quiet during the region’s 35 years of unrest. Jammu and Kashmir The region is a territory controlled by India, which borders Pakistan. The highest proportion of Muslim residents across all territories of India. It was partly an autonomous state until 2019, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government revoked autonomy and brought it to full under the Indian Constitution.
India’s governing BJP party I said It has rectified its autonomy to fix a massive “historical blunder” and solidify India’s claims about the region. Kashmir was one of the most troublesome relics British colonial period – a once-independent state where the status of modern India and Pakistan after its establishment was often the point of violent conflict. India and Pakistan have fought three wars since 1947, two of which have surpassed Kashmir.
BJP critics said the government has revoked Kashmir’s autonomy as a political stunt to build credibility with nationalist voters, or perhaps even a prelude to expel Muslim residents from the territory. Separatist violence has declined since 2019, but harsh feelings remained.
Farragum appeared to be part of Kashmir, which had not had a resentment. Its picturesque architecture and breathtaking mountain scenery have become a popular tourist destination. Locals seemed pleased with their thriving holiday industry.
One of Farragum’s most beloved Attractions It is a meadow area of Baisalan and a somewhat sturdy park with fantastic mountain views. A group of tourists from all over India gathered in Baisalan on Tuesday when four gunmen attacked and hunted and slaughtered male visitors.
In addition to his deaths, dozens of injuries were reported. One reason for the high casualties is that the Baisaran is difficult to access by vehicle. Most traffic is on foot or horseback. The video, filmed by a terrifying survivor who fled for their lives, quickly went viral on social media in India.
The murderer escaped the female tourists he met. One of them I said She overcomes her grief when her husband is murdered and asks the attacker to kill her too. One of them replied, “I won’t kill you. Go and tell Modi this.”
Some female survivors said the attackers had tested the victims by targeting Hindu men in particular, sparing Muslims, ordering them to recite poems from the Quran, and shooting deaths of people who did not follow them. Police say at least one of the victims is a Muslim man.
India was shocked by the Farragham attack, the worst civilian terrorist massacre since the 2008 attack on Mumbai and the worst violence to hit Kashmir over the years. Prime Minister Modi has returned early from overseas travel to coordinate India’s response. His defense minister, Rajnath Singh, had strongly hinted that India would take military action. And it’s not just against the specific rebel groups who claimed responsibility for the attack.
“The person responsible and those behind such acts will soon hear our reaction loudly and clearly. We will reach not only those who committed this incident, but also those who are sitting behind the scenes who conspired to commit such acts in Indian soil,” Singh said.
A relatively small extremist group called The Resistance Front (TRF) used the telegram messaging platform on Tuesday Claim Responsibility for the attack. The group is one of the few Kashmiri rebellion operations that do not use Islamic names that appear to be intentional efforts to cast themselves as Kashmiri patriots and nationalists. After Kashmir’s autonomy was revoked in 2019, he first became active on social media.
Indian security officials speculate that the secular act of the TRF is a smokescreen and that the group is actually a derivative of the Pakistan-based jihadist organization, Rashkar Etaiba (LT). LT was the group behind the 2008 attack in Mumbai.
The TRF said on Telegram that the purpose of India is to prevent India from changing the demographics of Kashmir by granting residence permits to “outsiders.”
“As a result, violence is directed at people who are trying to settle it illegally,” the group said.
While Indian opposition politicians have largely expressed their support for Modi, who acted aggressively against the attackers, there have also been criticisms of Modi’s overly focus on establishing a sense of “normality” in Kashmir at the expense of effective terrorism.
Indian security officials may also underestimate the willingness of extremists to be attacked by Kashmir tourism.
The industry appears to be freefalling on Wednesday, and reports are close to panic among tourists fleeing Kashmir and canceling future bookings. Jammu and Kashmir Prime Minister Omar Abdullah I was saddened “The Book of Exodus of Guests.”
“It’s heartbreaking to see guests leaving the valley after yesterday’s tragic terrorist attacks in Pahargam, but at the same time, I fully understand why people want to leave,” he said.
“This tragedy will paralyze businesses in Kashmir. We are working hard to reassure customers who may still want to come,” said Abdul Salam, hotel manager.
Wednesday, India Degraded Diplomatic relations with Pakistan have suspended key cross-border water treaties, announced travel restrictions, withdrawn Indian military advisers and many diplomats from Pakistan, and expel Pakistan military advisers from India. Pakistani citizens visiting India on a special visa have been told to go home.
Pakistan was initially quite silent on the attack on Pahargam beyond expressing formal sadness to the victims, but Pakistan’s minister Awais Regali on Wednesday condemned the suspension of India’s water treaty as “ward disease” and “water war” acts as “illegal” acts.
“Every drop is ours and we will fully comply with it, legally, politically and globally,” declared Regali.
The unexpectedly strong condemnation of the terrorist attack comes from Afghan Taliban regime, which complements India as relations with Pakistan have worsened over the past few years.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Emirates of Afghanistan has firmly condemned the recent attacks on tourists in the Pahargam region of Jammu and Kashmir and expresses sadness to the families of the bereaved families.”
Balki I said“An incident like this undermines efforts to ensure the safety and stability of the region.”
President Donald Trump Called Kashmir will be “deeply intrusive” with Truth Social Post on Tuesday.
“We pray for the souls of the lost people, for the recovery of the wounded. Prime Minister Modi and the incredible people of India have full support and deep sympathy. Our hearts are with you!” Trump wrote.
