Terry McLaurin Updates from Commanders’ Training Camp
Terry McLaurin showed up at the Washington Commanders’ training camp in late July, yet he didn’t participate in the practice sessions. His absence seems to be primarily linked to injuries and some concerns regarding his contract, although there was good news shared about him on Saturday.
McLaurin was recently taken off a list that restricted him from participating due to physical issues. It appears this move isn’t directly tied to any negotiations for a contract extension, according to sources. Nevertheless, it does allow McLaurin to join the practices leading up to the regular season, effectively ending his holdout.
Initially, McLaurin was placed on the injury list due to an ankle issue, which led him to miss the first several days of training camp. As a result, he faced fines that totaled over six figures.
In a conversation with reporters last month, McLaurin expressed frustration over the progression of his contract discussions. He mentioned, “I want to continue my career here. I’ve built a life in this city; my wife and I bought our first home here. This is where I want to be.” He acknowledged the business aspects of the sport but conveyed his desire to be valued properly.
If a contract extension isn’t finalized by September 7, during the Commanders’ season opener, McLaurin might consider sitting out. However, doing so would mean missing out on his game paycheck.
Currently, McLaurin has one year left on a three-year deal he signed in 2022. He did inquire about a trade at the end of July, but the Commanders showed minimal interest in moving him.
Last season was a standout for McLaurin, as he recorded a career-high 13 touchdown receptions and amassed 1,096 receiving yards. Drafted in the third round in 2019 from Ohio State, he has consistently surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in all seasons, except for his rookie year.
