Tesla Appeals to the EPA to Safeguard What Lee Zeldin Refers to as the 'Holy Grail of Climate Beliefs'

Tesla Urges EPA to Maintain Greenhouse Gas Regulations

Tesla, led by Elon Musk, is calling on the EPA to uphold foundational legal frameworks that regulate greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles. The company warns that retracting these standards could jeopardize investments from electric vehicle manufacturers and hamper efforts against climate change. EPA administrator Lee Zeldin has characterized the regulation as “the Holy Grail of Climate Change Religion.”

In a recent comment to the EPA, Tesla voiced strong opposition to the agency’s move to withdraw a 2009 finding that greenhouse gases emitted by vehicles pose a risk to human health and welfare. This discovery serves as a critical legal framework for controlling carbon emissions from vehicles and other major pollution sources.

Tesla contends that this danger detection is not only legally sound but also “based on robust facts and scientific records.” The company emphasized that this recognition has created a stable regulatory environment that underpins its significant investments in product development and manufacturing.

The pushback from electric vehicle manufacturers comes amid an effort to roll back key climate policies. In August, the EPA put forth a proposal that Zeldin described as “essentially driving the dagger into the heart of climate change religion.”

The acknowledgement of risk established a legitimate basis for regulating greenhouse gas emissions, suggesting that these emissions may pose a threat to public health and safety.

Zeldin stated at a Breitbart roundtable that he never conclusively claimed that carbon dioxide from vehicle engines caused “danger,” labeling the finding as “the holy grail of climate change religion.”

The EPA is currently engaged in legal and scientific discussions to reassess the 2009 findings and the validity of tailpipe regulations. The agency argues that recent Supreme Court rulings in 2022 and 2024 could allow for policy changes without explicit congressional approval, suggesting that prior analyses of the scientific record may have been flawed.

Tesla’s comments not only take issue with the removal of danger detection, but they also challenge the EPA’s broader plans to eliminate emission standards for cars and trucks altogether. Tesla recognizes the authority and responsibility of the EPA to set greenhouse gas standards for vehicles while acknowledging that current regulations can be complex and may require streamlining.

Environmental advocates, Democrats, and other stakeholders have criticized the EPA’s proposal, asserting that it undermines established climate science and could severely impact emission reductions in the transportation sector, which is the largest source of greenhouse gases in the nation.
