A speeding Tesla crashed into a rock slab and burst into flames on a Westchester County road Tuesday morning, killing the two people inside, officials said.

Pelham Manor Fire Chief Michael Greco said the driver and passenger were pronounced dead after the flames were extinguished. Their identities were not disclosed Tuesday night.
It took about 20 minutes to extinguish the fire, but firefighters were at the scene for several hours removing bodies and securing lithium-ion batteries scattered on the road.
“We heard a crackling sound and knew it was a Tesla, so we knew the battery was damaged and that it was also involved in the fire,” Greco told the Post, adding that the battery was damaged. He pointed out that the burst made it easier to fight the fire.

Chris Ganpat, owner of Manor Auto Service Center, told police: “I heard an explosion and ran toward the garage, and the next thing I saw was a car on fire against a wall.'' I could see it,” he said.
“I was so angry thinking about the people inside. It's Christmas time and I feel really bad for their families right now,” he added.
The cause of the crash has not been determined.
