Tesla Offers Major Discounts on Cybertruck
Elon Musk’s Tesla has announced significant discounts on Cybertruck electric pickup trucks, coincidentally on the same day that Musk publicly distanced himself from President Donald Trump.
The Cybertruck, once a highly anticipated vehicle in the electric market, is now struggling to generate sales. Tesla is rolling out unprecedented discounts to boost demand, including interest-free loans for Cybertruck purchases through the end of June.
This announcement is notable not only for its content but also for the timing. It occurred on the day Trump claimed to have triumphed in an election against Musk, amidst other controversial remarks regarding Musk’s technologies. The Cybertruck appears to have found traction mainly among conservative consumers, seen as a status symbol, particularly among younger influencers. In a previous event, streamer Adin Ross even gifted a Cybertruck to Trump in August 2024.
After initially securing over 1 million pre-orders, the production versions of the Cybertruck have had price tags nearly double what was promised in 2023, with diminished range specifications leading to a severe drop in demand. Tesla had ambitious plans for annual production, forecasting 250,000 to 500,000 units at its Texas Gigafactory, but ultimately managed to sell only 40,000 units in the first year. Recent data indicates that sales have further declined in 2025, with the company moving only about 25,000 Cybertrucks annually, significantly below expectations.
In response to the sales slump, Tesla has started to slow down production this year and has introduced sudden price cuts. The latest zero percent APR financing offer is aimed at Cybertrucks purchased with an $8,000 fully automated driving package. This shift follows reports suggesting Tesla may be abandoning plans to equip the Cybertruck with standard autopilot features, nudging customers towards pricier FSD options.
As Tesla’s prospects increasingly hinge on the success of its fully automated driving initiatives, advancements from competitors in Robotaxi technology pose a further threat. The Cybertruck’s struggles to penetrate the market, combined with underutilized production capacity, create a challenging scenario for what was once a pioneer in the electric vehicle sector.
