Tesla Hints at Affordable Model Y Launch
Tesla dropped some hints about an upcoming event on October 7th. This has sparked investor interest, particularly around the low-cost models, leading to a 3% jump in stock prices early on Monday.
In a 9-second clip shared on social media platform X, Tesla showcased a vehicle with its headlights on in a dark setting, teasing Tuesday’s event. There were also separate posts that prominently featured the date “10/7.”
The company had previously announced a slowdown in releasing a more affordable version of the US Model Y. Back in June, a “first build” was created, but sales were pushed back to the fourth quarter, with output ramping up more gradually than originally planned.
This scaled-down version is projected to be around 20% cheaper than the current Model Y, with plans to produce approximately 250,000 units annually in the US by 2026.
“Tesla loves to tease significant developments, especially when there’s a buzz surrounding a more affordable Model Y launch slated for tomorrow,” noted Matt Blitzman, a senior equity analyst. Interestingly, he personally owns shares in Tesla.
“The pricing is crucial,” he added, indicating it could give insights about the cost-saving measures Tesla has undertaken and potential new demand they could tap into.”
This teaser comes shortly after Tesla’s record-setting third quarter delivery numbers, which were boosted by a rush of electric vehicle purchases before the expiration of a $7,500 US EV tax credit on September 30th. However, analysts are cautiously optimistic, predicting a dip in sales soon without further incentives.
Predictions from Visible Alpha suggest that Tesla’s delivery might swell to 1.85 million vehicles next year, translating to about 155,610 units.
It’s worth noting that Tesla hasn’t launched any new mass-market vehicles in a while and relies more on updates to the Model 3 and Model Y to drive sales.
Meanwhile, sales of the Cybertruck, which is the last significant launch, have faced challenges. Tesla has been offering hefty discounts on available models over the last few months.
In March, a US recall affected 46,096 Cybertrucks manufactured earlier in the year since its introduction in November 2023.
