Tesla’s Unexpected Dive into Pickleball with New Paddle
Elon Musk’s Tesla has surprised everyone by launching a high-end pickleball paddle. This unique product, priced at $350, is a collaboration with sporting goods company Selkirk, and its development reportedly took over a year.
The paddle, made of carbon fiber with a foam core, is marketed as being “optimized for high-performance play.” Tom Burns, co-owner and R&D director at Selkirk, remarked that this project involved genuine engineering collaboration, not just branding. He noted that Tesla’s design team and Selkirk’s R&D spent significant time refining prototypes.
The idea for this collaboration was born during a conversation between Burns and Tesla’s engineering team at the 2023 USA Pickleball National Championship. Following the delivery of custom Tesla-themed paddles to the team, Selkirk leaders visited Tesla’s factory in Fremont, California. There, they connected with Javier Verdura, Tesla’s global product design director and pickleball enthusiast, to kick off the design process. The prototype went through extensive aerodynamic testing before receiving final approval.
A spokesperson from Selkirk revealed that the limited edition paddle sold out within just three hours of its release on their website, although there’s no word on when it might be available again.
This new paddle marks Tesla’s first venture into traditional sports equipment, yet the company has a history of creating lifestyle products, such as drinkware and backpacks. Musk’s affinity for unconventional items was evident with the success of the Boring Company’s flamethrower in 2018.
Pickleball itself has been climbing in popularity, merging aspects of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. According to a report by the Sports and Fitness Industry Association, participation has surged by 45.8 percent since last year, and there’s been a remarkable 311 percent growth over the past three years. The sport has particularly caught on among Silicon Valley professionals and celebrities, evolving from a simple hobby into a popular networking avenue for those aged 55 and up.
While basic pickleball gear remains relatively inexpensive, with entry-level paddles and balls usually under $50, the sport’s growing appeal to the affluent has led to demand for higher-end options. Some Selkirk models can surpass $299, similar to the cost of the Tesla paddle.
Reactions to Tesla’s paddle have been mixed on social media. Some fans see it as a unique gift idea, while others criticize the steep price and Selkirk’s choice to partner with Tesla instead of a well-known pickleball player. Jimmy Miller, a pickleball player and podcast host, expressed skepticism about this strategy, mentioning that Selkirk seems to prefer collaboration with large brands unrelated to pickleball over working with established pros. It raises an interesting question about whether this approach will actually succeed.
