Tesla Recalls Over 218,000 Vehicles Due to Camera Lag Issues

Elon Musk’s Tesla is recalling more than 218,000 vehicles from various models because of a software glitch that could lead to delays in rear-view camera images, increasing the likelihood of accidents.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that Tesla is recalling 218,868 vehicles due to the rearview camera display lag. This issue affects several Tesla models, including the Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X, spanning different manufacturing years.

The recall encompasses a variety of model years, including three Model Y vehicles from 2017, as well as those from 2021, 2022, and 2023. Additionally, Model S and Model X vehicles from 2021, 2022, and 2023 are included.

NHTSA mentions that all affected vehicles have hardware version 3, which Tesla ceased production on in January 2024. The primary concern is the delay in the rearview camera display when drivers shift into reverse, which can impair visibility and mislead drivers into thinking there are no obstacles, raising the risk of accidents.

Though the situation presents safety risks, Tesla has stated that there have been no reported crashes, fatalities, or injuries related to this camera issue. However, the company has received 27 warranty claims and two field reports indicating that customers have experienced these delays during actual driving.

Tesla plans to resolve the problem with a complimentary over-the-air software update for all affected vehicle owners. The specific software version in question is 2026.8.6, with the fix designated as 2026.8.6.1. This method illustrates Tesla’s capability to fix vehicle issues remotely, so owners won’t need to visit a service center.

Owners of the recalled Tesla vehicles should expect notifications from the company regarding the recall and the software updates. If there are any questions about whether a vehicle is affected, Tesla customer service or the NHTSA website can provide assistance using the Vehicle Identification Number.
