Tesla to Launch Affordable Model Y SUV

On October 7, 2025, Tesla is set to reveal a more budget-friendly version of its popular Model Y SUV. This move comes as the electric vehicle manufacturer aims to counteract declining sales and increasing competition in the market.

Elon Musk, the CEO, has long promised vehicles aimed at the mass market, but he scrapped a plan last year for a new $25,000 electric vehicle. The upcoming launch is expected to feature a more “affordable” model utilizing existing manufacturing and design frameworks.

Over the weekend, Tesla stirred up buzz on social media, sharing two brief videos on X. One depicts headlights emerging from darkness, while the other hints at a spinning wheel, accompanied by the date “10/7” displayed in American format.

So far, there hasn’t been any indication from Tesla or its influencers about an in-person launch event, which is a departure from past product unveilings. Still, analysts, investors, and enthusiasts anticipate some kind of announcement from the company.

Key details that remain unknown include the vehicle’s price point and driving range. Musk previously suggested it would be priced under $30,000, factoring in U.S. EV tax credits.

The recent expiration of a $7,500 credit in the U.S. has effectively increased prices, prompting a spike in quarterly sales. However, there are concerns that this momentum may slow down unless the new, affordable model can invigorate the market.

“The demand is there, it’s just that people aren’t able to afford it right now,” Musk noted during Tesla’s earnings call in July. “So making it more affordable could really help.”

Initially, Musk indicated that production might start by the end of June. However, Tesla has so far only completed initial builds and aims to make the vehicle available to customers in late 2025.

As competition intensifies, particularly in regions like China and Europe, Tesla has been confronting decreasing sales of its older models. Musk’s controversial political stance has also affected brand loyalty. Earlier this year, a refreshed Model Y was launched, featuring upgrades like new light bars and a rear touchscreen.

Musk is also shifting the company’s focus toward artificial intelligence, with plans for robotaxis and humanoid robots. While Tesla has indicated that it will introduce more budget-friendly options, specifics remain scarce. Sources have mentioned a simpler version of the Model 3 sedan may also be on the horizon.

Providing affordable vehicles will be crucial for Tesla to meet its goal of delivering 20 million units over the next decade, which is part of several operational benchmarks tied to a proposed $1 trillion compensation package for Musk.
