Tesla forgoes Uber model for a more personalized ride experience

Tesla seems to be focusing more on travelers who enjoy their own company rather than relying on Uber drivers. The company recently announced a new production facility in Texas, dubbed Gigafactory Texas, as it gears up for an increasingly automated future.

As they boost production of self-driving cars, Elon Musk’s venture is expanding its horizons by linking some of its vehicles to its taxi application, joining the ranks of others like Waymo and GM’s Cruise.

They’re introducing a new line of vehicles named Cybercab, touted as “specifically designed for autonomous driving.” These new battery-electric models won’t even have steering wheels or pedals, marking a shift toward a futuristic driving experience. Rumor has it they’ll also include wireless charging features and could potentially offer a range of about 200 miles on a single charge.

Set to integrate with Tesla’s existing Robotaxi app, launching in 2025, the Cybercab aims to provide what they describe as a “personalized driverless experience.” Currently, rides are available using Tesla Model Y vehicles, but Tesla is targeting customers who may be weary of traditional human-driven rides.

In this regard, Tesla highlights how their ride experience seeks to avoid common annoyances found in traditional taxi rides. For instance, passengers can save their heating and cooling preferences within the app, so settings adjust automatically for each trip. Plus, they can stream their favorite music, avoiding those awkward moments of listening to someone else’s playlist.

However, there are some rules in place. Children under eight-years-old aren’t permitted to ride, and minors aged between eight and seventeen can’t travel unaccompanied. Additionally, compliance with child safety laws means that a child seat must be provided by parents for infants.

Pets, aside from service animals, are also not allowed in the vehicles. Tesla mentions that the capacity is limited to three passengers with a combined weight of 800 pounds, and no one’s allowed to sit in the front seats. Furthermore, smoking, e-cigarettes, and alcohol consumption are strictly banned inside the vehicles.

Passengers must also adhere to regulations against recording or collecting data inside the cars. This setup is currently available only to residents in Austin, Dallas, and Houston, Texas.
