Tesla Reopens Reservations for Next-Generation Roadster
Tesla has started accepting reservations again for its long-awaited next-generation Roadster, asking customers for a $50,000 commitment just weeks before unveiling the revamped model.
To secure a reservation, potential buyers must make an initial, fully refundable payment of $5,000 through a credit card. After that, they have to complete a $45,000 wire transfer within ten days to finalize their reservation.
This renewed effort comes nearly nine years after CEO Elon Musk first showcased a prototype of the updated Roadster in 2017. After several delays, Tesla is set to reveal the redesigned vehicle on October 1 at an event in Texas.
Musk recently announced the event on social media, referring to it as “New Tesla Roadster Unveil 10.01” and described the upcoming presentation as a “banger.” During a recent appearance at the All-In Summit, he mentioned that having a live audience is essential for showcasing what’s real and not just AI-generated.
There are reports suggesting that the event may feature a limited-edition Roadster with cold-gas thrusters, developed in partnership with SpaceX. Tesla’s teaser images also hint at this possibility, showing the vehicle against a launch-themed background.
The Roadster program has reportedly undergone significant changes since its initial design. Instead of utilizing components from the Model S Plaid, Tesla has opted to develop an entirely new carbon-fiber hypercar.
Initially presented in November 2017, Tesla expected to start deliveries in 2020. At that time, the company promoted a base price of $200,000, claiming acceleration from zero to 60 mph in just 1.9 seconds and a range of 620 miles. They also accepted $250,000 deposits for a special “Founders Series” version.
The vehicle hasn’t gone into production as anticipated and has experienced multiple delays since its last update.
What’s still uncertain is the pricing for the redesigned Roadster and how Tesla plans to manage reservations made years ago. The company has not yet commented on these issues or provided updates about vehicle specifications.
