Owen McIntyre, 19, was released and ordered to detain her parents in Missouri home this week by federal court in Massachusetts, and was ordered by a judge to answer charges against him Thursday.

A federal defense attorney for McIntire claimed that his client was a college student without a previous criminal history with well-documented medical and mental health needs, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADHD, depression and gender discomfort.

“He also receives gender-maintenance care that begins this March and is likely to be completely suspended or terminated if he remains in pretrial custody,” the court filing on April 23 said. “This care, along with mental health support, is essential to his well-being.”

At the time of the attack, McIntyre was registered with the University of Massachusetts to pursue a degree in physics.
