A Unique Ministry Celebrates Five Years of Service in Texas
AZURE, Texas — A man in the community is marking five years of dedication to nearly 7,000 individuals through a distinctive ministry.
William Norman has spent endless hours under a tent at the bustling Azul intersection, easily visible to passersby.
But Norman isn’t just there to watch the cars; he offers two vital services that so many seem to need these days: a caring ear and a sense of companionship.
This Wednesday, he celebrated the fifth anniversary of his establishment at the intersection. In a Facebook post, he described it as a “true blessing” to assist thousands through his “Listening Corner.”
“The support from the people of Azure, Springtown, and surrounding areas has been essential to this service, which has reached many across the U.S.,” he expressed. “You’ve helped me share Christ’s love with a hurting world. As we hit this milestone, I want to acknowledge your support and acceptance. Thank you; I truly appreciate you.”
Roadside Missions emerged after Norman’s grandson felt inspired by a personal challenge to help others.
“The more I pondered it, the more it weighed on my mind,” he recounted in a Saturday interview.
He purchased a tent from Walmart, set up two lawn chairs, and a friend crafted a simple sign that said, “Want to talk? We’ll listen.”
It wasn’t long before the community and travelers took notice.
“People began to arrive. Folks were queuing in the parking lot, asking, ‘Hey, what’s the cost?’ Nothing. It’s unbelievable,” he recalled.
Norman mentioned that he provides a listening ear and engages with people for free, never requesting anything in return.
“You really just have to show up. I think consistency is key. My belief is that while no one can help everyone, everyone can help someone,” he added.
Over time, Norman has listened to individuals dealing with various challenges, from grief and addiction to relationship issues and homelessness.
Many people have revisited him, sharing their stories of recovery and healthier lives.
As a Christian, Norman stated, “I care for all these individuals, regardless of their background. They all deserve to be heard.”
He added, “Many stop by seeking prayers in tough moments, and I’m always there for them.”
Norman believes that listening is an art he’s honed while working under tents and in all weather conditions.
“Listening is learning… Every morning, I prayed for guidance. ‘Lord, help me know what to say—give me the wisdom to share the right information and support. Help me know when to speak and when to remain silent,'” he reflected.
Despite facing health challenges that could have kept him at home, Norman remains devoted to his calling, continuously eager to show love and support to others.
When asked if he had a message for the broader American audience, Norman replied, “I always tell people: Appreciate others, be kind, love others. If we embrace these values, I believe we’ll do well, as we’ll draw more people to Christ through our actions.”
