Azeez Al Shaair, a linebacker for the Texans, has been fined $11,593 by the NFL for donning eye black with the message “Stop the Genocide” during a wild-card match against the Steelers last Monday. This information was reported by ESPN.
Al Shaair wore the eye black during the game and even in a postgame interview on SportsCenter. According to the NFL, this violated their equipment policy prohibiting personal messages on eye black.
The message he displayed relates to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Al Shaair, who identifies as Muslim, has previously highlighted this issue through the NFL’s “My Cause My Cleats” initiative.
In a past interview with the Houston Chronicle, he expressed concerns about the situation, saying, “It feels like something we’re trying to silence.” He added, “It’s not right for people to lose their lives on either side… Innocent people are suffering, and it’s just crazy.”
He emphasized that the individuals affected are human beings, stating, “We all look the same. Whatever our backgrounds, we’re all human.”
This incident is part of a broader trend in the NFL, which has been cracking down on players expressing political messages. For example, last season, 49ers player Nick Bosa faced an $11,255 fine for wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat during a teammate’s postgame interview, supporting then-President Donald Trump shortly before the 2024 election.
Reportedly, Bosa violated league rules stating that players cannot wear or display any personal message unless it’s been pre-approved. This is outlined in the NFL’s regulations regarding player attire during visible moments.
Al Shaair, now in his seventh NFL season at 28 years old, had a standout regular season with 103 tackles and nine passes defended, which earned him his first Pro Bowl selection.
In the playoff game against the Steelers, he made six tackles, helping the Texans secure a 30-6 victory, which allows them to advance and face the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium this Sunday. The winner will move on to the AFC Championship Game against the Broncos, who recently defeated the Bills in overtime. Notably, Denver’s star quarterback Bo Nix will be sidelined for the rest of the postseason due to a broken right ankle.
