Paxton’s “come and receive” phrase is deeply rooted in Texas history.
According to the Houston Chronicle, the phrase “come and seize” dates back to the Battle of Thermopylae, when King Leonidas used the phrase “molon labe” to rebel against Persian troops trying to steal his army’s weapons.
But on October 2, 1835, the phrase became a part of Texas pride, and when a small group of rebellious settlers rebelled against Mexican rule in what is now South Texas, they named it the “Battle of Gonzalez.” It has become a symbol of resilience. This was also the first military battle of the Texas Revolution.
During the battle of Gonzalez, they shouted, “Come and take it!” It became Texas’ Declaration of Independence.

The premise of the battle focused on American colonists who refused to return the cannons depicted on their flag to Mexican soldiers who had received them in 1831 to fight the natives of the area.
The Chronicle also reported that the colonists wanted artillery to protect themselves from the increasingly aggressive actions of Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna.
The flag used in this battle has become a symbol of Texas pride and was the first flag used during the Texas Revolution.

This phrase is now widely used and has come to symbolize rebellion against someone or something that seeks to strip you of your rights and privileges.
Fast forward to 2024, and Mr. Paxton is leading Texas with Mr. Kobach in a multistate coalition defending the constitutional right to buy and sell firearms privately.
The new ATF policy proposed by the Biden administration would require those selling guns, primarily for commercial purposes, to register as licensed dealers and undergo background checks, regardless of where the transaction takes place. .

“Once again, Joe Biden is weaponizing the federal bureaucracy to tear apart the Constitution and destroy people’s Second Amendment rights,” Paxton said. “This is a dramatic escalation of his tyrannical abuse of power. We are honored that today’s lawsuit protects our constitutionally protected freedoms from an out-of-control federal government.”
